Aztecs Women's Basketball locks up No. 1 seed for Regionals after topping Mesa CC to end regular season
The Pima Community College women's basketball team (24-4, 16-2 in ACCAC) closed out the regular season on Wednesday against Mesa Community College (19-7, 13-4) on Jim Rosborough Appreciation Night at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium
- The No. 9 ranked Aztecs defeated the No. 14 Thunderbirds 74-60 locking up the No. 1 seed for the Region I, Division II Tournament. They closed the regular season on a 12-game winning streak.
- The Aztecs held a 62-54 lead with 5:08 left in the game and used a 12-2 run in almost four minutes to take their biggest lead of the game at 74-56 with 1:23 remaining.
- The Aztecs opened the game on a 9-2 run and never relinquished their lead. Up 19-18, they went on a 9-0 run to take their first double digit lead at 28-18 in the second quarter. Pima was up 36-25, but the Thunderbirds closed out the first half on an 11-4 run. The Aztecs clinged to a 40-36 lead at the break.
- Sophomore Kiley Sours-Miller (Dream City Christian) posted her 12th double-double of the season as she finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
- Freshman Reigne Waugh scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds to go with two assists and two steals.
- Sophomore Melicia Nelson finished with a double-double as she posted six points to go with 13 rebounds and 11 assists. She also had three steals and three blocks.
- Sophomore Lucy Land contributed with nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.
- Freshman Lucy Fisher (Mesquite HS) closed it out with eight points and 15 rebounds while fellow freshman Kahlia Gonzales (Mesquite HS) added eight points, seven rebounds and four assists.
- The Aztecs took two of the three regular season meetings with the Thunderbirds.
- The Aztecs honored assistant coach Rosborough during halftime.
The No. 1 seeded Aztecs will host No. 4 seed Phoenix College in the Region I, Division II Semifinal round on Wednesday, Mar. 4 at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium. Tip-off will be at 7:00 p.m.
