Aztecs Women's Basketball uses 7-0 run in overtime to beat Cochise College

The Pima Community College women's basketball team (11-3) closed out 2025 with another big win over an ACCAC Division I team at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

  • The No. 5 ranked Aztecs scored the first seven points of overtime to beat Cochise College 72-67. It was Pima's second straight win over the Apaches in any many days as they won 93-83 on Tuesday. Before Monday's win, the Aztecs had lost the previous six meetings to the Apaches and their last win came on April 2, 2021.
  • Freshmen Kahlia Gonzales (Mesquite HS) and Reigne Waugh were crucial in Pima's run to start the extra period. Gonzales hit a three-pointer and Waugh hit three free throws to make it 70-63. Sophomore Lucy Land scored the first point with her free throw. The Apaches cut Pima's lead to three points at 70-67 but freshman Lucy Fisher's (Mesquite HS) jumper halted their run.
  • The Aztecs led 28-26 at halftime and started the third quarter on a 9-0 run to make it 37-26. The Apaches went scoreless for the first 3:12 of the quarter. The Aztecs matched their biggest lead of the game at 48-37 entering the fourth quarter.
  • The Aztecs held a 52-41 lead, but Cochise went on a 13-2 run to tie the game at 54-54. Pima never surrendered the lead but there were three more tie scores before it went to overtime. There were nine ties and five lead changes in the game.
  • Waugh finished with a team-high 17 points on 6 for 9 shooting. She also had five rebounds and three steals.
  • Sophomore Melicia Nelson (Window Rock HS) closed it out with 16 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals while fellow sophomore Kiley Sours-Miller (Dream City Academy) added 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
  • Gonzales had 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals off the bench.
  • The Aztecs shot 43.6 percent (24-55) from the field, 40 percent (6-15) from beyond the arc and 64.3 percent (18-28) from the free throw line.

The Aztecs get back to ACCAC conference play to start the new year as they host Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Gym. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
