Martin and Nunez pace the offense, Flores has 12 strikeouts as Softball sweeps by Glendale CC

The Pima Community College softball team (25-1, 17-1 in ACCAC) got back to ACCAC conference play on Saturday and showed off its offensive strength against Glendale Community College (10-10, 9-9) at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field.
Sophomore Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) showed power from the lead-off spot as she finished the day 6 for 7 with four RBIs, seven runs scored and two home runs. Freshman Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) continued her dominance at the plate going 5 for 7 with six RBIs, a run and a homer. Sophomore Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) went 2 for 7 with two RBIs and two runs. Freshman Arianna Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) and sophomore Jessica Thompson (Tanque Verde HS) got the wins in the circle.

  • Game 1: (5) Pima CC Aztecs 8, Glendale CC Gauchos 0 (6 innings): Flores was dominant in the circle as she pitched all six innings, giving up one hit with 12 strikeouts and four walks on 97 pitches earning her 11th win on the season.
    The Aztecs got on the board with two runs in the 1st inning. Nunez hit an RBI single to score Martin, who led off with a double. Rivera hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to plate sophomore Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS).
    The Aztecs did their damage with no outs in the 2nd inning as freshman Taiya Teixeira (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit an RBI single and Martin followed with a three-run homer to score freshman Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS) and Teixeira to make it 6-0.
    Martin smashed her second home run of the game with a lead-off shot to center field in the 6th inning as she finished the game 3 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Nunez went 2 for 3 with an RBI while Rivera and Teixeira each went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Freshman Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside HS) and Figueroa were each 2 for 3 with a run.

  • Game 2: (5) Pima CC Aztecs 13, Glendale CC Gauchos 5 (5 innings): The Aztecs took control in the 4th and 5th innings to earn their second run rule win of the day.
    With the score tied at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the 4th inning, the offense put up five runs in the inning.
    Freshman Belen Camacho (Pueblo HS) wasted no time as she hit a lead-off home run to left field to put the Aztecs back up 5-4. Marx, Nunez and sophomore Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo HS) hit three straight RBI singles and freshman Julissa Lopez (Tucson Magnet HS) added more insurance with her RBI single to cap off the inning as Pima took a 9-4 lead.
    The Gauchos got a run back in the top of the 5th inning but the Aztecs won it in the bottom of the inning with another four runs. Rivera hit an RBI double and later scored on an error to end the game.
    Martin was a flawless 3 for 3 with four runs scored while Nunez hit a three-run home run in the 3rd inning and finished 3 for 4 with five RBIs and a run. Marx went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored and Noriega was 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Camacho closed it out going 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run while Rivera finished 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run.
    Thompson picked up the win as she pitched all five innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts on 82 pitches.

The Aztecs have another quick turnaround as they play at Paradise Valley Community College on Monday in an ACCAC doubleheader in Phoenix. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
