Romero Named ACCAC Player of the Year; Four Tapped All-ACCAC/Region I
The Pima Community College men's soccer team were well-represented in the All-ACCAC/NJCAA Region I teams released on Monday.
Sophomore forward Jason Romero was named the ACCAC/NJCAA Region I Player of the Year. He scored 24 goals with eight assists and finished with 56 points during the regular season. He started 14 out of the 16 games he played and was second in the conference and fifth in the nation in goals scored.
This was the second straight year the Aztecs produced an ACCAC/NJCAA Region I Player of the Year. Arturo Vega was the recipient of the honor last year.
Romero and fellow sophomore forward Alejandro Gonzalez (Flowing Wells HS) were named first team All-ACCAC/NJCAA Region I. Gonzalez scored 14 goals with seven assists and had 35 points. He made 18 starts out of the 19 games he played.
Sophomore midfielder Angel Heredia was selected to the second team. He had nine goals and nine assists with 27 points. He started and played in 19 games.
Sophomore defender Robert Gorman (Nogales HS) was named to the All-ACCAC/NJCAA Region I Honorable Mention team. He had one goal and one assist but was vital in helping the Aztecs only give up 22 goals this season. He also helped them earn six shutout wins; which included the final three regular season games on the road.
The No. 3 seeded Aztecs defeated No. 6 Mesa Community College 3-0 at Kino North Grandstand in the Region I, Division I tournament quarterfinals. They'll play at No. 2 Arizona Western College in the semifinals tomorrow in Yuma at 6:00 p.m.
