Figueroa-Brito has three RBIs and two runs, Hennesy picks up win in relief as Baseball splits with Scottsdale CC

The Pima Community College baseball team (20-19, 12-14 in ACCAC) got back to ACCAC conference play on Tuesday as it hosted a doubleheader with Scottsdale Community College (19-18, 13-13).
The Aztecs suffered a tough loss on a questionable call in the first game but regrouped to win the second game and earn the split. Freshman Adriel Figueroa-Brito closed out the afternoon going 3-for-7 with three RBIs and two runs scored while sophomore Mike Jones (Canyon del Oero HS) went 3-for-8 with two runs. Sophomore Jackson Glueck was 2-for-7 with an RBI and two runs.
Sophomore Cam Grenert (Horizon HS) took the loss in relief for the first game, but sophomore Quintin Hennesy (Horizon HS) got the win in relief in the second game.

  • Game 1: Scottsdale CC Artichokes 10, Pima CC Aztecs 3: The game was tied heading into extra innings, but the Artichokes scored seven runs to take control and win the first game.
    The Aztecs had a chance to win it on a walk-off in the 7th inning. Glueck drew a lead-off walk and freshman Cooper Kruk (Catalina Foothills HS) followed with a single. With one out, Figueroa-Brito drew a walk to load the bases. Jones hit a ball to right field as Glueck attempted to score on the sacrifice, but he was called out at home plate after his slide.
    Freshman Damian Lorta (Desert View HS) started off the 1st inning with an RBI single to score Glueck. Sophomore Ramon Martinez tied the game in the 4th inning after his RBI single scored Jones to make it 2-2.
    The Aztecs tied the game in the 5th inning after a fielder's choice play brought in Glueck.
    Glueck closed out the game 1-for-3 with two runs while Lorta was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Martinez finished 1-for-4 with an RBI. Jones was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
    Cam Grenert took the loss in relief as he pitched two and one-third innings, giving up seven runs (four earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

  • Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 12, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 4: The Aztecs scored in every inning and put the Artichokes away after scoring eight unanswered.
    Martinez and Cereceres hit back-to-back RBI singles to score Aciel Guillen (Salpointe Catholic HS) and freshman Juan Hernandez (Tucson Magnet HS) to make it 3-2. The game was tied 4-4 in the 3rd inning after Guillen hit an RBI double. Glueck gave Pima the lead in the 4th after an RBI single scored Figueroa-Brito. Guillen came through again in the 5th inning with an RBI triple that brought in Jones to make it 6-4.
    Figueroa-Brito capped off the scoring with a two-run RBI single in the 6th. He finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
    Jones closed it out by going 2-for-4 with a run. Cereceres was 1-for-4 with three RBIs and a run while Hernandez finished 1-for-2 with two runs, and two walks. Glueck went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
    Hennesy came in for relief and pitched a gem as he went six innings, giving up two runs (two earned) on seven hits with nine strikeouts and two walks on 99 pitches, picking up the win.
