Executive Assistant Athletic Director Jerry Stitt shares story about Willie Mays
Pima Community College Executive Assistant Athletic Director and former University of Arizona coach Jerry Stitt shared a story about Willie Mays:
"Growing up in Phoenix I was a huge Giants fan. Willie was my idol! When I was named Head Coach of the (Arizona) Wildcats, my good friend all the way through school presented this signed photo to me at a reception. I went to bp (batting practice) when JT Snow was with the Giants and had the immense pleasure of meeting Willie with JT in Dusty Baker's office. When JT said my name, Willie said, "I know who you are, you coached with Jerry Kindall, and you coached this guy!" I was floored to say the least - right up there with talking hitting with Ted! Then Willie said with a chuckle "I'll never forgive Jerry for pulling the hidden ball trick on me at 2nd base at Wrigley! He was a rookie!!"
Willie Mays was inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame in 1979 after 23 season career from 1951-1973. He was a World Series Champion in 1954 with the then New York Giants.
