Aztecs women's tennis advance to final round in all six singles at Region I Championships

The Pima Community College women's tennis team took care of business in the first day of the Region I Championships on Tuesday at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.

The Aztecs advanced all of their singles competitors to the championship round which will be played on Wednesday.

Sophomore Emma Oropeza (Nogales HS) won her No. 1 singles match over Kelly Slattery from Paradise Valley Community College. Slattery was forced to retire. Oropeza won the first set 6-4 but dropped the second set 2-6.

Sophomore Janine Fernando (Sabino HS) advanced to the No. 2 singles final match after she defeated Cindy Anders from Mesa Community College 6-2, 7-6 (1).

Freshman Meghan Houk (Corona del Sol HS) won her No. 3 singles match but Mesa's Stephanie Alsman was forced to retire. Houk had taken the first set 6-1.

Sophomore Lien Nguyen and freshman Ashley Fitzsimmons (Walden Grove HS) earned shutout victories at No. 4 and No.5 singles respectively over Glendale Community College.

The semifinal and final round of the women's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles will be played on Wednesday. Competition begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Paseo Racquet Center.

No. 5 singles (Finals): Ashley Fitzsimmons (Pima) vs. Vanessa Mitrica (Mesa Community College)

No. 6 singles (Finals): Jayme Shafer (Pima) vs. Heidi Simons (Eastern Arizona College)

No. 1 doubles (Semifinals): Oropeza/Fernando (Pima) vs. Sala Yoshida/Cindy Anders (Mesa Community College)

No. 2 doubles (Semifinals): Houk/Nguyen (Pima) vs. Glendale Community College

No. 3 doubles (Finals): Fitzsimmons/Shafer (Pima) vs. Ashlyn Trejo/Heidi Simons (Eastern Arizona College)
